Ambassador Guo Shaochun Meets with Vice President Chiwenga


On March 26th, Ambassador Guo met with Vice President Chiwenga,exchanging views on the development of China-Zimbabwe relations.

Ambassador Guo conveyed the message of condolences Chinese President Xi Jinping extended to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the recent hurricane. He also briefed on the humanitarian assistance in cash by the Chinese government and the donations by overseas Chinese communities and Chinese companies. Ambassador Guo stressed that China believes in the capability of Zimbabwean people to overcome difficulties and resume normal production and life soon. As a good friend, China would continue to provide assistance for disaster relief and recovery.

Vice President Chiwenga warmly welcomed Ambassador Guo and pledged to provide him with full support. He briefed on the progress of disaster relief and thanked the Chinese government, Chinese embassy and Chinese people in Zimbabwe for the condolences and the large number of relief supplies. Zimbabwe was focusing on transporting relief supplies to the victims to ensure that aid is most effective.

Ambassador Guo stressed that China and Zimbabwe enjoy profound friendship and carry out extensive cooperation in politics, economy and culture. Last year, President Mnangagwa visited China twice, upgrading our bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The two countries boast great potential in cooperation. The two sides can deepen cooperation in agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), so as to better benefit the two countries and the two peoples.

Vice President Chiwenga agreed with Ambassador Guo on the current state of China-Zimbabwe relations. He stated that under the leadership of the senior officials from both sides, the bilateral relations had been upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The development of future relations should focus on economic cooperation. The two sides should continuously increase areas of mutual interests and enhance mutual understanding, so that the friendship between Zimbabwe and China will be more deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. It is hoped that China will continue to increase investment in the Zimbabwean infrastructure, mining, manufacturing and other fields to help it achieve economic recovery and prosperity.

Vice President Chiwenga emphasized that Zimbabwe firmly adheres to the one-China policy. Zimbabwe is ready to cooperate with China to implement the outcomes of FOCAC and actively participate in the construction of Belt and Road, yielding more fruits on bilateral relations and Zimbabwe's efforts to realize Vision 2030.

After the meeting, Ambassador Guo gave interviews to Zimbabwean media including The Herald. The meeting was fully covered by ZBC and The Herald.

Attending the meeting were Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Moyo, Director of Asia-Pacific Department Mageza and Political Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe Zhao Baogang.
