Interview: Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun Shares Views on
China-Zimbabwe Relationship

On April 17, the eve of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the China and Zimbabwe, Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun gives an interview with Xinhua News Agency, China Central Television, China Radio International, sharing his views on the development of China-Zimbabwe relationship and all-round cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties and the prospects of further implementing FOCAC Beijing Summit outcomes and keeping the strong momentum of the bilateral relations.

Ambassador Guo notes that China and Zimbabwe are good friends, good brothers and good partners. China-Zimbabwe relationship is one of the strongest ties between China and African countries. In the past 40 years, the two countries have forged an unbreakable friendship.

Over the past 40 years, China and Zimbabwe have been deepening political mutual trust and upholding common interests. The two countries have been extending mutual assistance and support to each other on international and regional issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns, consistently adhering to multilateralism, jointly upholding the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law, and promoting democracy in international relations and advancement of the international governance system.

He points out President Xi Jinping and President Mnangagwa have met several times in the past few years and elevated China-Zimbabwe relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation, which opened a new era for bilateral ties.

Over the past 40 years, China and Zimbabwe have produced good results in practical cooperation. A number of major projects are being carried out or have been delivered, such as the Zimbabwe National Stadium, Kariba South Hydro Power Station Extension project, Hwange Thermal Power Station Project, Victoria Falls International Airport, and Robert G. Mugabe International Airport, giving a strong boost to Zimbabwe's social and economic development. Cooperation in health care and education and humanitarian assistance has played an important role in raising people's living standard. Robust trade and investment has increased local employment and changed people's life.

Ambassador Guo believes China-Zimbabwe cooperation enjoys great potential and broad prospects. At the beginning of this year, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Zimbabwe and held talks and meetings with President Mnangagwa, Vice President Chiwenga and Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Moyo respectively. Together, they charted the course for the further development of China-Zimbabwe relations.

In the future, China and Zimbabwe will follow-through on "the Eight Major Initiatives" proposed during the FOCAC Beijing Summit and strengthen cooperation under "Belt and Road Initiative". They will keep up high-level exchange, upgrade cooperation in economic and social areas, promote people-to-people and cultural interactions, continue to support each other in the international community, reject unilateralism and bullying, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries. Hand in hand, China and Zimbabwe will build a closer community of common destiny.

China-Zimbabwe relationship has shown stronger vitality in the outbreak of Covid-19. When China was fighting hard against the virus, Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa and Foreign Minister Moyo sent letters of sympathies to Chinese President Xi Jinping and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi respectively, expressing strong confidence in China. When the epidemic began to spread in Zimbabwe, the Chinese Government, Zimbabwe's sister provinces and cities in China, the Chinese business community in the two countries, and Chinese nationals in Zimbabwe donated much-needed supplies and helped upgrade hospitals to strengthen Zimbabwe's preparedness.

Ambassador Guo reiterates that China will continue to follow the approach of "sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith" in cooperation with Africa and work Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa to build a China-Africa community of health.

China will complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects by 2020, and Zimbabwe is also making great efforts to realize its 2030 vision. Further synergizing the development strategies of the two sides will push bilateral cooperation to broader areas and bring more results.

With the joint efforts of both sides, he strongly believes China-Zimbabwe relations will continue to take the lead in China's cooperation with African countries and become a successful example of South-South cooperation. He is fully confident China-Zimbabwe relationship will enjoy an even brighter future.
