Chinese Embassy and the Chinese community Held Donation
Ceremony to Assist Zimbabwe in disaster relief

On March 20, 2019, the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese community in Zimbabwe held Donation Ceremony to assist Zimbabwe in disaster-relief in Harare. The ambassador from Chinese Embassy Mr. Guo Shaochun, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Mr. Rushwaya, representatives from Chinese Business association in Zimbabwe, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinese Federation in Zimbabwe and Sino-Zim Wildlife Foundation attended the event and gave their remarks. Staffs from the Embassy, the overseas Chinese and the representatives from Zimbabwe side, attended the ceremony.

The ambassador Mr. Guo Shaochun on behalf of the Chinese Government conveyed his condolences to Zimbabwe, which had been affected by the cyclone disaster, in particular for the loss of many lives and the great damage caused by the disaster. He expressed sincere sympathy to the victims, hoped the injured could recover and return to their homes soon.

Ambassador Mr. Guo Shaochun said, as Zimbabwe's good friend and good brother, China feels the pain of Zimbabwean people in this disaster. Currently, in response to the call of the embassy, the Chinese community mobilized relief materials worth of 200,000.00 US dollars including flour, cooking oil, bottled water, tents, quilts and blankets etc. which would be delivered to the hands of the victims in the affected regions right after the ceremony. In the next following days, Chinese government would try its best to provide more assistance and support to Zimbabwean government and people, helping Zimbabwean people enhance the confidence and capability to fight against the disaster. We believe under the strong leadership of the President of Mnangagwa, Zimbabwean people will for sure overcome the temporary difficulties and rebuild their homes.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Rushwaya expressed sincere gratitude to the Chinese embassy in Zimbabwe and the Chinese communities, on behalf of his government and the Ministry for the support and donation. Mr. Rushwaya said, Manicaland province, East Mashonaland province and Masvingo province were severely affected by the cyclone. Close to 100 people died, over 100 went missing and over thousand went homeless and suffered great losses. 'A friend in need is a friend in deed', the donation from the Chinese communities adequately reflects the deep friendship between Zimbabwe and China. These relief materials are very important and they will be loaded and transported soon to the hands of the victims which would greatly improve the life of the victims.

Representatives from Chinese Business association in Zimbabwe, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinese Federation in Zimbabwe and Sino-Zim Wildlife Foundation extended support to the victims of the disaster, and said they would continue to bring more relief materials to the affected regions.

After the event, Ambassador Mr. Guo Shaochun accepted the interviews from Zimbabwe media including ZBC, The Herald, News Daily and The Zimbabwe Independent,etc.
